Board of Deacons
The Deacons support the people of our church and local community in a
variety of ways. We work closely with our pastors to understand the needs of our
congregation, particularly during times of illness, change and uncertainty.
Parish Care Groups: The purpose of this ministry is to
build care relationships with the congregation. According to the
Presbyterian Book of Order (G-6.0401) "the office of deacon as set forth
in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of
Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary
lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment
should be chosen for this office."
As a ministry of service the deacons seek to build relationships with
the congregation. Each deacon has 10-15 members/attendees assigned to
their care. Through regular contact they support and assist in the needs
of their small "flock". Often this is simply through a friendly email,
postcard or phone call. Sometimes it is care ministry that extends to
family needs or transitions such as an illness or loss of a loved one.
Parish care ministry may also help in the organization of meals or other
assistance in time of spiritual or physical need. If you are a member of
Hilltop Church or live in or near the Mendham area and would like a Deacon
to contact you about a parish care need please call the church office.
Community Contacts: We keep in touch with housebound members and
friends of our congregationproviding companionship, meals, and a caring connection
to the church.
Meals on Wheels:
The Deacons coordinate Hilltop Churchs
delivery of hot meals to shut-ins. We generally have responsibility for Meals on Wheels in
the Mendhams in June and December.
Deacons Blood Drive:
At least once a
year the Deacons sponsor a blood
drive at Hilltop House.
We work with the Family Enrichment Program of Morristown
Memorial Hospital to provide gifts and food certificates for foster children and families
in need during the Christmas season. We also make monetary donations throughout the year
to meet special needs.
The Deacons throw a fun-filled picnic each June
for the entire congregationwith great food, fellowship, and games.
Tuesday Pancake Supper: The Deacons sponsor the annual
Shrove Tuesday Dinner. Proceeds from the Dinner benefit local mission
projects and charities in the community.
2011 Shrove Tuesday Pancake
Teas: The Deacons host
teas for the ladies of Hilltop Church,
sometimes at Christmas time and occasionally in the spring.
